Do you know that “Your heart does not know if you mean the words you speak.” That is why it’s so important to watch what we say or speak about. Take a listen to this Podcast to learn about the importance of the words you speak.
Welcome friends to my Podcast Giving You a Fresh Start After Trauma. I’m glad you are here and hope that this short message will begin to put you on a path of watching what words are spoken from your mouth. Let’s get started.
“I’d Prefer to Read Your Message!”
Not too long ago I was in a trauma training class, and the instructor told us that when you ruminate about your trauma and speak about it repeatedly, your mind does not know if it’s really happening at that moment or just a memory. Because it doesn’t know if it’s happening at that moment, it acts as if you are in that trauma state and puts you in that “flight or fight mode.”
Being constant in “flight or fight mode” is dangerous to your health and well-being. Your cortisol has risen and keeps you in that place to be able to fight or flight quickly. Your sympathetic system is on overload. Sometimes when we have been in that state for an extended period of time, we don’t even realize we are there. It becomes a normal state.
Why Bridle Our Tongues?
Could this be why the Bible tells us to “bridle our tongue.” It compares our tongue to the rudder on a boat. A rudder is a very small thing but it can steer the largest of ships. The same with our tongue. When we “let loose” with our tongue, who knows where it will “steer” our life.
This was one area that I faulted in for the longest time. I was in such pain from the traumas in my life that one of the ways I would release it was through talking about it, complaining about it and even complaining about things not even related to the trauma. Sadly, it was a very unhealthy way to release my pain.
It wasn’t until I would completely gave my pain and trauma over to the Lord and asked for healing, was I released … instantly (regarding that specific issue I brought to the Lord.).
What are you giving voice to in your life?
What words are you speaking out that is giving more power to your troubles and pain? Your mindset is made up of your beliefs from circumstances (good or bad), experiences and sadly trauma. For example, if you grew up hearing “money doesn’t grow on trees” then you could have developed a scarcity mindset.
Or if you had a loved one who was sick and you prayed and prayed for their healing, but they were not healed, you could have developed the belief or mindset that “God doesn’t always heal and He probably won’t heal me.” We cannot allow circumstances to create our belief system. We must go to the place of truth and begin to renew our minds with God’s truth. Don’t focus on the facts of your situation, focus on His truth.
Don’t know how to renew my mind!
You might ask, “Well how do I do that? How do I renew my mind?” God’s Word always gives us answers to our questions. In the Book of Joshua, God says, “to meditate on His Word day and night.” For example you are confused about what to do it a specific situation. It might look something like this …
“Ok I’m confused about what to do in this situation, but God’s Word says I have His wisdom inside of me. So, thank you Lord for Your wisdom and giving me the answer, strategy or direction for the situation I’m in.”
Meditate Throughout Your Day!
Then, you just meditate on this thought throughout the day. I’m not saying you need to sit with your Bible and say it over and over again. No just throughout the day thank Him for His wisdom and that you know He is directing your steps. In time, you will have the answer you need. You will know that you know the answer that came to you was from God. God’s Word is full of wisdom and truth.
It did take some time for me to realize that spewing my pain was not a healthy way for me to live and from time to time I can fall back into it. But I am quicker at stopping myself or catching myself before I start.
How about you? Can you use some help in “renewing your mind?” Don’t stay in that place of confusion, uncertainty or pain any longer. God has your answer and He willingly want to give it to you.
Be blessed and encouraged.
