I’d Prefer to Read Your Message!

Today I want to follow up on my email from last week titled “Our Lawn and Our Gut!”  If you didn’t get a chance to read it, you can find it in my Blog post here.  You can read it or listen as a Podcast.  https://reginasanchez.com/our-lawn-and-our-gut/

Recently, my dear friend Kia gave me a Green Stalk Tower to plant veggies, herbs or flowers on my deck.  This is new to me, so I’ve been doing some investigating.  You watch one YouTube video and boom a ton more of the same topic pop up.

Well, the other day this woman did a video on “her honest assessment of Green Stalk.”  Catchy title (it got me) but she was in 100% supportive of these plant towers.  I was happy to hear that.  She talked about how each year you don’t have to replace the soil, but you must replenish it and replenish it with natural “live” ingredientsMiracle Grow or their soil is not one of them.

Microbiome of Soil

Her point was that the plants from the prior year will take the nutrients out of the soil so it must be replenished or your next round of growing might not go well.  She stated, “the microbiome of the soil needs healthy nutrients and chemicals are not nutrients.”  Oh, there we go again.  That word … microbiome.  We need to be concerned about the microbiome of the soil we use for planting.

It the same with us. Our bodies and our gut need nutrients for our body to be healthy.  And one of the things that can really disturb your microbiome is soda and specifically the sugar in soda.

I have written before about the health issues with drinking soda but wanted to send along this visual to help you get a grasp on how drinking soda can be for your health.  Now there are sodas with sugar and then some are sugar free.  To my clients who cannot get away from drinking diet sodas I say that the soda with sugar is a little better than the one with sugar free chemicals.  But I think I’m changing my stand on that as well.

Look at this visual.

If you drink 1 soda a day, every day, for 28 days you’ve taken in 455 teaspoons of sugar or 4 lbs.  Think about what a 5-pound bag of sugar looks like.  You’d almost be there and could be if you drink more than one soda a day.

The side effects of too much sugar could be:

  • Weight gain
  • Obesity
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Liver overload or non-alcohol fatty liver
  • Skin issues such as acne
  • Bottom line it messes with your microbiome

These are serious issues and should not be taken lightly … especially if you are a soda drinker.

Sugar Free is a Concern as Well

Now those who love their sugar free soda should be concerned as well.  Do you know that studies are showing that drinking sugar free soda can also cause you to gain weight?  How? The chemicals in the sugar free substance signals your brain that you are hungry and you will crave more food.

For some people these chemical non-sweeteners have mimicked Multiple Sclerosis.  Let’s look at some of the side effects of just aspartame?

  • Decreased vision
  • Headaches, migraines
  • Epileptic seizures
  • Severe depression
  • Irritability
  • Phobias
  • Severe PMS
  • Hyperactivity in children
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Birth defects

If you are suffering from some of the minor symptoms like irritability, headaches, severe PMS or even depression, consider strongly stopping the use of Aspartame in all food and not just diet soda.  Don’t wait until it starts to manifest as MS or Fibromyalgia or other serious health issues.

What are you to do instead?

Drink water.  Plenty of water and if you don’t like plain water then liven it up with:

  • Sliced strawberries, raspberries, blackberries
  • Sliced cucumbers, celery or ginger
  • Fresh Mint
  • Sliced oranges, lemons or limes
  • Fresh basil

Or a combination of the above or whatever would cause you to drink it.

You could also make cold brewed herbal teas.  This can be refreshing for the summer months.

Be sure you keep a pitcher of water or tea in the refrigerator so it’s nice and cold when you need a drink.  Click this link to get some recipes of healthy, natural flavored water.

In summary, it’s important that you feed your microbiome with healthy, real, live nutrients so the garden of your life can grow!
