Last week we talked about your creativity. Did you take some time during the week to work on an existing project, start a new one or finish one that is long overdue? I’d love to hear about what you ventured into.
This week we are going to look at the area of your education.
This Circle of Life Spoke on the Wheel isn’t necessarily what you might think it is. When you hear the word “education,” what comes to mind? Does bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or PhDs come to the surface? If so, does that turn you off thinking …
- I’m done with college.
- When I attended school, I wasn’t good and I’m not going back.
- Money is scare and I don’t have it to go back to school.
- I don’t like what colleges are standing for, and the list could go on.
Well college is not where I’m going with this “spoke on the wheel.” Education to me is a lifelong journey that truly never ends. It is a way to learn something new each and every day and it does NOT have to be about college but about what interests me and what I have a passion for.
There are so many ways to get “educated.”
You could read a book, attend a class, go on YouTube or be mentored by someone. Right now, I attend a weekly quilting class because I wanted to learn to quilt. I had one started back in 2007 but never finished it. I finally determined in my heart that I was going to complete this long-ago project. My daughter was helping me get started back in 2007 but I still wasn’t confident in my ability to quilt, so I hired an instructor.
I’m loving this class because Karlie, my teacher, is teaching me techniques that I didn’t know. I am a sewer and have made clothes and curtains years ago. But quilting was a new venture for me. Instead of struggling and getting frustrated, I decided to take this class and work to complete my project. I’ve finished that quilt from 2007, made a Jelly Roll Rug and am now starting another quilt. I will have more projects down the road too!
Learning daily doesn’t have to be complicated or difficult.
It just needs to be something that interests you and you would enjoy learning about. Learning is so good for our minds. I love following the teachings and writings of Dr. Amen. Dr. Amen says that the aging of our brains does not need to match our aging bodies. We don’t have to believe that as we age, we probably will become “forgetful” or even get dementia. That’s not true. Plus, don’t even speak that into yourself. There is so much that can be done to keep our brains healthy. As Dr. Amen says, because we don’t see our brain, we tend to forget about its health. But because of the concept of neuroplasticity, we can change our brains. It’s never too late to bring health to our brain which will bring health to our body.
Learning is a wonderful tool for your overall health. How? It’s exercising your brain and causing it to grow. Learning can bring you joy, or perhaps a new adventure or can even help take away loneliness.
So, what can you learn today?
What is something you’ve wanted to learn how to do for a while, but you’ve put it off? Go for it. Put it on your calendar and To Do list. Commit to yourself that you will begin to learn something new if not weekly at least monthly.
Know that I’m here to help in any way. I understand difficulties in learning because I grew up believing I was stupid. So, for me to try to “teach” myself something new was very hard for me and I shied away from for years. Don’t let years go by for you.
