I don’t know about you, but I try to avoid putting any chemicals in my body as much as possible or at least intentionally. I wanted to share with you the history of how we moved from natural healing and Naturopathic Doctors to a “pill for an ill” and Traditional Doctors but I cannot locate the video I watched discussing this history and of course Google is not natural healing friendly. It was very interesting and enlightening, and I will eventually find it and share this History.
But for now, I would like to share with you some ways to support your Immune System with Herbs.
Eating Real Food
We all know that eating as much as possible whole, real food in its original form is the first step to supporting and strengthening your Immune System. Then getting enough sleep and managing your stress would be another aspect to pay attention to. Adding Vitamin C, Zinc and being sure your Vitamin D levels are in a normal range would be wise and lastly adding herbs to your diet will also, strengthen and support your Immune System.
Here are 7 Herbs to consider:
- Curcumin – is high in antioxidant properties. Curcumin is the active polyphenolic compound that you find in Turmeric. Try this recipe as a way of getting your Turmeric/Curcumin. https://www.vitacost.com/blog/turmeric-butternut-squash-mac-cheese/ or of course you can take a supplement.
- Astragalus – is a known adaptogen. Adaptogens are a class of herbs (found in many herbal supplements) that are intended to boost your resistance to and tolerance of emotional and physical stress. Astragalus is known to facilitate a stronger response to stress while also helping your body return to a place of homeostasis. You can sprinkle this root on your favorite homemade soups.
- Elderberry – is also known as Sambucus and can either be found in a supplement or as a syrup. This plant goes all the way back to Hippocrates who called this his “medicine chest.” Elderberry is a type of flavonoid with very strong antioxidant support. Grab a bottle of this syrup at your favorite health food store or consider Vitacost. Many options here https://www.vitacost.com/productsearch.aspx?t=elderberry%20syrup
- Garlic – not only is garlic a tasty herb for your cooking but it works as a great support for your Immune System. Garlic will strengthen certain types of immune cells so your body can fight colds and the flu. No need to give ideas on how to cook with this, make a great pot of sauce.
- Ginger – many of us know and use ginger for stomach issues but also know that it works as a great shield to fight against the winter cold. Ginger also has a compound called rhizome that will provide natural support and relief from arthritis and will help to alleviation a dry and scratchy throat. You can get ginger in the actual root or ginger tea. Ginger tea provides great comfort in the dead of winter, or simply make your own drink by taking the root and boiling in some water for a warm cup of tea.
- Rosemary – is rich in iron and calcium which is critical for your well-being. Also, Rosemary contains folate which help to calm your nervous system and help with those “winter blues.” I love using Rosemary on my roasts.
- Oregano – this herb is great for calming that cough you may get in those winter months. It’s a great support for your lungs and respiratory health. Oregano also has antibiotic effects. I love my Oregano in a homemade pot of sauce.
Consider adding these herbs into your daily diet. Remember it’s more about “adding in” as opposed to removing. We are trying to do a shift in our body’s cravings to desire more of “healthful” foods as opposed to junk or processed foods. Consider taking one of these herbs and supplementing it into your diet for 30 days. Then the next month add in another.
If you would like some help in incorporating these herbs into your diet, just let me know. I’d be happy to offer you some suggestions.
