For years, we have believed that sugar only effects our waistline or our insulin. But there is more havoc to our body that sugar can cause, and that area is your brain. Take a listen to this podcast to get a greater understanding how sugar could be rewiring your brain and not for good.
Welcome friends to my Podcast Giving You a Fresh Start after Trauma. Not only do I help bring peace into people’s lives through my Spiritual Coaching, I also work with individuals to detox their pantry of chemicalized foods that could be destroying their God given health. I’m glad you are here.

Did you know the average American consumes 17 teaspoons of added sugar a day? That added sugar is usually found in food you are not even aware it’s there. It’s not the teaspoon you may put in your coffee or tea. It’s the sugar added to foods to make them taste better.
Not only is sugar expanding our waistlines it is also damaging our brains. It is said that Alzheimer’s is Type III Diabetes.
Studies have shown that even small amounts of excess sugar can trigger memory loss, mood swings, and even early dementia and this can begin to happen long before you realize your body is beginning to fail.
How does sugar “rewire” your brain? Here are 8 different ways that Dr. Laara Van Bryce, Functional Medicine Doctor, addresses.
Here are the 8 ways!
- It can impair your cognitive functioning. High levels of sugar are known to reduce neuroplasticity in your brain. Neuroplasticity is the ability of your brain to repair itself as well as adapt to learning and forming new memories. You are even more prone to forgetfulness.
- Because sugar does to your brain like cocaine does, it can create an addictive personality.
- Sugar can cause you to have mood swings or be irritable.
- Excess sugar can impede your memory capabilities. It causes inflammation in the hippocampus part of your brain which is responsible for learning and memory.
- Sugar can increase your risk of vascular dementia. High blood sugar levels damage your blood vessels and reduce oxygen flowing to your brain.
- Sugar is responsible for inflammation and oxidative stress in your brain. The more sugar you eat the more “free radicals” are created. These free radicals can be found throughout your body and even in your eyes which is one of the causes of Age-related Macular Degenerative disease. AMD is one of the leading causes of blindness. These free radicals and oxidative stress can also contribute to anxiety and depression.
- High sugar in children can lead to hyperactivity, ADD, ADHD.
- Sugar will rewire your satiety signs … which is your sense of hunger. It interferes with leptin and ghrelin which are the hormones that regular hunger and satiety. Even if you ate enough your brain will signal “hunger” because of the effects of sugar intake.
What is One to Do?
So, what is one to do to reverse the damage sugar may have caused you? Now you may be saying, “This is going to be a hard task. Are you saying no more sugar? I don’t like that.”
Well, the first thing I would do is really start reading labels and cut out those foods that have “hidden” sugar. For example, do you buy jarred spaghetti sauce? Well, most of those sauces have added sugar. You have to ask why? Is it because they use tomatoes that are tasteless?
Next, be sure you are getting enough protein and fiber in your diet. This will help absorb some of the sugar you take in.
Lastly, have a glass of water when you have a craving … especially for something sweet. After you have that glass of water, see if you still do have that craving or feeling of hunger. Sometimes those cravings are dehydration.
By making these changes, you’ll discover how sugar has been affecting your focus, energy, mental clarity, and long-term brain health. Are you ready to take back control of your health? Remember …
